How can we Grow the Capacity to Open Space?

A conversation began among a few people who wondered if it was time to host a Practice of Peace Open Space. As we talked, heartbreak at the state of our democracies emerged. Also, grief over fracturing communities and a shared recognition of the epidemic of loneliness that touches nearly everywhere.

We realized that each of us knows in our bones that when we open space, something essential becomes possible. Opening space ignites hope and inspiration, genuine connection, and the energy to act—to do together what none of us can do alone. Again and again, we’ve seen this: whatever the challenge, when we put out a call shaped as a real question—one that invites the diversity of those who care—we discover among us the capacity to make a difference.

If you find yourself nodding “yes” as you read this, this call is for you.

Across the world, people are learning how to gather in ways that allow us to be fully ourselves, to connect meaningfully with others—especially when issues are complex, perspectives differ, conflict (real or imagined) is present, and time feels urgent.

Some will recognize these conditions as those where Open Space Technology shines: a simple yet powerful practice that enables groups of any size to self-organize around what truly matters, trusting that insight and breakthrough emerge from the life of the space itself.

Which brings us to a deeper question:

How can we support each other to grow the capacity to open space?

Those who open space for peace, democracy, community, and renewal. Those who host, invite, and make connecting possible. Those who may not run an open space but know the process and are skilled at bringing people from different parts of the system together.

Many of us have seen this process work. We know that the more opening space becomes “just the way things happen,” the more we experience peace. Democracy. Community. And a growing personal capacity to take responsibility for what we love—as an act of service.

We seek to strengthen and grow the community of space openers

To cultivate a regenerative community.

To invite and support anyone facing intractable challenges to discover that they, too, have the capacity to open space.

By connecting with one another—sharing stories, practices, playbooks, training, research, and encouragement—we aim to strengthen and supercharge this living network. Our aspiration: by supporting each other, with time, opening space becomes simply the way people interact.

This event will be conducted as two online Open Space Technology meetings in two time zones. You can choose one or both. Be sure to make your registration via the links above and you will have a confirmation with the Zoom-link.
